Rice distributed by WFP substandard: Parliamentary committee

KATHMANDU, June 25: A parliamentary committee has concluded that the World Food Program (WFP) distributed substandard rice to the earthquake victims in Laprak of Gorkha district.

Following an inspection at Majuwa Deurali of Gorkha district by a joint team of comprising representatives of political parties and agriculture department, the team had suggested WFP to not distribute the food.

However, the representatives of WFP had distributed the food saying 'this rice is good for Gorkha', a report prepared by a subcommittee of National Disaster Management Monitoring and Direction Committee stated.

The report concludes that the rice distributed by WFP was found to be rotten. A general inspection of the rice was not done even at the store-houses before dispating the same as a relief material to the affected areas.


The committee today submitted its report to Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang.
