CHITWAN, July 26: A rhino calf in the Chitwan National Park died on Thursday morning. The calf´s mother had left it to fend for itself in search of a mating partner on Wednesday.

According to the national park, calves do not survive long without their mother´s care. “Moreover, left without mothers the calves are exposed to the dangers of a life in a jungle,” said Jhambahadur Karki, chief conservation officer at the park. [break]“But the mother rhinos have been leaving their wards alone in search of mating partners.”

“We had found the injured calf drowned it a pool of water in the jungle and immediately informed the national park. However, its health had deteriorated by the time park officials arrived,” said Raju Silwal, chairperson of Kumroj community forest.

But Karki argued that they had been waiting for the mother rhino to come and take care of its ward.

“So we waited till evening. Many calves have died in the past unable to cope parting with their mothers,” Karki said. Karki stated that the national park is planning to deploy patrolling team to take care of the abandoned calves.
