Returnee migrant worker Kanchhimaya scales Mt Everest

KATHMANDU, May 23: Kanchhimaya Tamang scaled Mt Everest to become the first women from her Tamang community to do so. 

Originally from Sindhupachowk district, Tamang reached atop the world's tallest peak at 6:00 am on May 20. 

At a news conference in the capital city today, Tamang said that she climbed Mt Everest with a purpose to disseminate message across the world against trafficking in persons and gender discrimination in sport sector. 

Sharing her experiences about her expedition, Tamang said that she faced hardships after her oxygen cylinder was used by others but successfully descended thanks to support from team leader Pemba Dorjee Sherpa. 

Tamang said that she returned home after 32 days of travel to make her community and objective meaningful despite lots of hassles in the expedition. 

Tamang is also a returnee migrant worker from Egypt. 

On the occasion, Member of UN Women Civil Society Group, Dr Ganesh Gurung expressed happiness for being able to help Tamang establish contact with the UN Women after she expressed her keen desire to scale Mt Everest. 

During the programme, President of Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Tshering Sherpa said that the state should give special attention for the protection and promotion of mountains adding that Himalayas are Nepal's identity. 

It was shared at the programme that UN Women and different other organizations extended their support to realize Tamang's expedition. RSS
