The NHRC on Wednesday summoned Minister for Home Affairs Shakti Bahadur Basnet to its office in Lalitpur to enquire about the issues. The NHRC members asked Minister Basnet to brief them about the cases of human rights violations in Tarai-Madhes during the ongoing protests. The officials highlighted that the human rights situation of the country has deteriorated with the protests in Tarai-Madhes continuing for a very long period.
The NHRC urged the government to seek solution to the existing problems raised by the agitators through dialogues and talks. Citing some cases of human rights violations, the officials had urged government to respect and protect human rights. The NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma urged that the state authorities should be more serious about protecting and enforcing human rights as the guardian of general public.
During the discussion, Minister Basnet claimed that the police have been responding sincerely to ease mobility on highways, supply system as well as protecting the lives of general people and public properties. He also claimed that government has been working to resolve the current crisis through dialogues.
Minister Basnet also claimed that the government has already started rehabilitating earthquake victims as well as distributing warm clothes to them for immediate relief.
