Speaking at an interaction program organized in the capital by the Parliamentary Foundation on Friday, Spokesperson of CPN(Maoist) Pampha Bhushal alleged that the Regmi government was formed at the direction of international players. “The four major parties are votaries of the international community and are committed to the latter,” she said. “How can an undemocratic government hold democratic polls under the status quo?” she asked. Coming down heavily on the Regmi-led government, she said the November poll was a grand design of the international community and Regmi was merely an agent of those foreign interests. She accused the government of ignoring the concerns of the opposition parties. “We will boycott the CA election forcefully,” she stated.
Chairman of Madhesi People´s Right Form-Nepal Upendra Yadav said that the Regmi-led government was not a neutral government. “The ministers in this government of bureaurcrats are also cadres of different parties,” he claimed. He further said that the four-party syndicate government could not hold free and fair elections.
He stressed that constituency delineations in Madhes should be based on population. “Fewer PR seats would further sideline the marginalized communities,” Yadav said. He stated that the ratio of First-Past-the-Post and PR seats should be similar to that of the last CA election.
Chairman of Federal Socialist Party Ashok Rai claimed that the 11-point political agreement and the 25-point ordinance for removing constitutional hurdles were steps to seriously undermine democratic norms. “To create a conducive environment for polls, the four party-led syndicate government should be dissolved,” said Rai. He further claimed that the High-Level Political Committee (HLPC) was controlled and directed by the four parties.
“The HLPC has lost meaning and its formation was but an attempt to control the entire democratic forces and eventually enforce a dictatorship,” he maintained.
General Secretary of MPRF-Democratic Jitendra Dev said, “As long as hooliganism prevails in the country, free and fair elections would not be possible.” He said that elections constitute the engine of democracy and the CA polls should be held on the scheduled date of November 19.
Central member of CPN (UML) Agni Kharel said that Regmi should resign from the post of chief justice. “We are ready to hold a round table conference of all parties to work out a consensus and pave the way for elections,” said Kharel.
Central member of Nepali Congress Hira Dutta Bhatta said that his party was flexible about addressing the concerns of the agitating parties on a favorable environment for the poll. “International actors are playing with the democratic process of Nepal,” he said, adding that foreign influence in domestic affairs was deepening.
