KATHMANDU, April 12: Nepal Police Club athlete Keshari Chaudhary returned to the track for the 38th National Athletics Championship on Wednesday after a nine-month long departmental training to set three national records to get a new tag of "record-girl of Nepali athletics".

Chaudhary, who set national records in the women´s 100m hurdles and long jump on Wednesday, made another record on Thursday as she jumped 12.20m to clinch gold in women´s triple jump event. She had the previous record of 11.67m. She is also the national record holder in women´s high jump event.[break]

"I´m delighted to set national records one after another and grateful to coach Nar Bahadur Shahi, who prepared me for hurdles in short period. Hurdles event was new for me," said Chaudhary to Republica.

Chaudhary, from Jogigaun of Bardiya, had started her sports career when she was studying in Angels School, Nepalgunj. She started her athletics career some eight years ago and had set national record in women´s high jump in her very first competitive tournament.

Chaudhary was also a cricketer initially. She was a member of the national cricket squad in the First ACC Women´s Championship held in Malaysia in 2007 and the ACC Women´s U-19 Championship held in Thailand in 2008. She had taken 10 wickets in the ACC U-19 to guide Nepal to title victory.

The athlete joined Nepal Police Club in 2009 as an athlete and joined police service officially two years ago.

"I´m not pursuing a cricketing career now since Nepal Police Club does not have a women´s cricket team. At present, I´m enjoying athletics," said Chaudhary.

Following one after another success in domestic track and field, she aims to win international medals. "I can do much better in triple jump event and hope for international success. However, everything depends on the preparation facilities," said Chaudhary.

Sushil Narsingh Rana, the chief-coach of athletics at National Sports Council suggested to Chaudhary to focus on triple jump and high jump only despite her recent success in hurdles and long jump.

"She has been able to set ew records in all the four events since the previous results were too poor. Her results are not close to any South Asian medalists. However, we cannot deny her natural talent in athletics. She is technically sound also," said Rana. "We can expect international successes from her if she focuses in triple jump and high jump only," he added.
