KATHMANDU, Aug 12: The Department of Passports (DoP) has sharply increased its e-passport production capacity, printing 5,878 passports in a single day—nearly four times its previous daily capacity of around 1,500.
According to the DoP, the record production was achieved on August 10 as it stepped up efforts to meet the growing demand for e-passports. The Department has recently begun producing more than 5,000 passports a day.
The DoP said it has been continuously upgrading its service system and production capacity to provide Nepali citizens with e-passports in a fast, secure and efficient manner. It said further expansion is underway to ensure applicants receive their passports on time.
Ballot papers printed for 36 districts
E-passport services are available beyond Kathmandu through all 77 district administration offices and various area administration offices across the country. Nepali citizens living abroad can also obtain e-passports through Nepali diplomatic missions.
The DoP said it has been coordinating with district and area administration offices and Nepali missions abroad to manage the growing number of applicants and improve passport production and service delivery.
Alongside expanding production capacity, the department said it is working to address technical problems that may arise in the e-passport system. Necessary technical and managerial measures are being implemented with the aim of stabilising the system within three months.
The DoP said it is coordinating with relevant technical teams to improve the system's capacity, stability and performance and prevent applicants from facing unnecessary difficulties in obtaining passports.
It said priority is being given to resolving technical issues and making e-passport services more convenient, reliable, secure and efficient.
