KATHMANDU, Sept 11: The government has estimated that Rs 2.34 billion will be required to rebuild and restore the education sector affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi River flood in Rasuwa on August 26.
According to a Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment report prepared by a joint technical team comprising the National Planning Commission and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 18 schools were affected by the flood.
Of them, 11 school buildings were completely destroyed, while seven sustained partial damage.

The flood also destroyed educational materials, furniture and other property inside the school buildings. More than 9,000 students in the affected area have had their education disrupted following the disaster.
The government estimates that Rs 105 million will be required immediately to restore school infrastructure and facilitate the resumption of classes. A further Rs 2.238 billion has been estimated for long-term recovery.
The government has announced a “Secured Future Scholarship Scheme” for students affected by the disaster. Five associations representing private schools in Nepal have also pledged Rs 1 billion in support for scholarships for flood-affected students at the government’s request.
Local governments are facilitating arrangements for displaced students to resume classes at schools convenient to where they are currently staying.
