Raj Kumari's family fears more attacks

NEPALGANJ, April 7: The family of Raj Kumari Rana, who was humiliated and physically tormented by her neighbors on the charge of practicing witchcraft Friday, is hesitant to return to the village due to fear of attack by the locals. The family members who have accompanied Raj Kumari to Nepalganj Medical College at Kohalpur for treatment, also requested human rights organizations to ensure their safe return home.



“My wife is innocent. But still she was humiliated and subjected to severe mistreatment. We fear more attacks and are unable to return home,” Nahara Rana, Raj Kumari´s husband said. “We fear for the lives of our daughters and daughters in law,” he added. Informing that the whole village has united against his family, Raj Kumar´s son, Dal Bahadur, said there is no situation in the village for them to return.[break]



Meanwhile, a team from the National Women´s Commission, which had reached Kailali to take stock of the situation of Raj Kumari and her family said that the Rana family is living in constant fear. Organizing press meet on Sunday, the commission´s spokesperson Mona Ansari informed that the village chief was reportedly threatening the Rana family to come to terms with the villagers and settle the case in village itself. “The family members are living in fear and are insecure in the village. The government should take responsibility for the security of the family,” Ansari said. Ansari also demanded that a case of attempt to murder should be registered against those involved in torturing Raj Kumari. Various rights activist also demanded to bring all the perpetrators to book and initiate stringent action against them.



A group, of locals of Beladevipur-8 in Kailali, including Nira Rana and Ram Singh Rana had mercilessly beaten up Raj Kumari after stripping her and forcing her to eat human feces. The locals had also forcefully tonsured her head and inserted a stick into her private parts Friday. Police have already arrested Nira and Ram Kumari, but two others, Ram Singh and Dharma Singh Rana, are still at large. In the meantime, Nepalganj Medical College at Kohalpur, where Raj Kumari is undergoing treatment, said that Raj Kumari´s heath is improving slowly.
