ITAHARI, July 2: The red light alert has been removed from the Koshi barrage, with water flow in the country’s largest river gradually starting to decrease on Saturday morning.

The water flow at the barrage was recorded at 1,44,990 cusecs this morning. The red light was lit on Friday morning as an alert warning against the threat of disaster after the water flow reached 1,59,025 cusecs. [break]

Only 19 of the 56 floodgates have been kept open after a fall in the water level at the barrage, informed District Police Office, Sunsari.

The river however has continued to breach the eastern embankment along the Rajabas settlement area.

Though the Indian authorities have been carrying renovation works at the site, locals say the efforts have proved not much effective in preventing the breach of the embankment.
