KATHMANDU, June 3: Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Rabi Lamichhane’s transfer process from Bhairahawa to Dillibazar Prison in Kathmandu is progressing as his pretrial custody period has been extended by the Supreme Court.

He is currently detained at the district prison in Bhairahawa on pretrial custody in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case. He has requested a transfer to Dillibazar Prison in Kathmandu.

Authorities have initiated the necessary procedures following his request, but the Prison Management Department will make the final decision.

After the Supreme Court ordered Lamichhane to remain in custody, officials confirmed that his detention period would be extended. Against this backdrop, Lamichhane requested the transfer, hoping that staying in Kathmandu will allow easier access to party leaders, activists, and family members.

Dillibazar Prison is often seen as the preferred facility for 'VIP' detainees.

Lamichhane has already secured permission for the transfer from the District Court of Rupandehi, and the District Administration Office has also approved it. After completing all legal procedures, the Prison Administration sent the file to the Prison Management Department for final approval, according to prison sources.

Earlier, the Butwal bench of the High Court in Tulsipur ordered Lamichhane's pretrial detention on charges of organized crime and embezzlement from Butwal-based Supreme Cooperative. Although the District Court of Rupandehi ordered his release on bail, the High Court canceled that order, and the Supreme Court later upheld the cancellation.
