KATHMANDU, Jan 21: Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated US President Donald Trump on his inauguration.
Putin, in a televised address to his National Security Council, said: "We welcome Trump's desire to restore relations with Russia and his statement that he will do everything possible to prevent World War III." He further added, "Of course, we welcome this position and congratulate the newly elected US president on taking the office."

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Putin said he was willing to have a conversation with the Trump administration. "We are not in favor of a temporary ceasefire, but a long-term peace. This respects the legitimate interests of all people of the region and the nation."
He pledged to stand up for Russia's interests, saying: "Naturally, we will always stand up for Russia's interests." Trump was sworn in as the 47th US president on Monday night, Nepali time.
