KATHMANDU, Aug 5: The government has appointed Prof Dr Khadga Bahadur KC as the chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC), with expectations that he will lead reforms in Nepal’s higher education sector.
The decision was made during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. According to the government, the appointment aims to strengthen the quality of higher education, improve coordination among universities, make the grant management system more effective, and promote research and innovation.
UGC starts determining equivalence of foreign academic degrees
A native of Modi Rural Municipality-5 in Parbat, Prof. KC is an academic and scholar of international relations and geopolitics. He holds a PhD in International Relations from Tribhuvan University and has more than three decades of experience in teaching, research and academic administration.
Before his appointment to the UGC, he served as rector of Tribhuvan University and was also entrusted with the responsibilities of acting vice-chancellor after the resignation of former vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Keshar Jung Baral.
Prof. KC previously headed the university’s Department of International Relations and Diplomacy and has published extensively on South Asian security, regional cooperation, Nepal-India relations, Nepal-China relations and Nepal’s foreign policy.
The government expects him to enhance academic quality, strengthen research and innovation, improve transparency in grant distribution, and play a leading role in reforming Nepal’s higher education system.
