KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Four of the seven universities padlocked by Professors' Association affiliated to the CPN-UML to protest the new appointments of vice chancellors remained shut on the fifth days of their protest as well.

The association charged that the VC-recommendation committee led by the Education Minister Chitra Lekha Yadav did not include professors affiliated to their association."The committee overlooked the contribution of the scholars that are part of our association," said Yadav Lamichhane, chairperson of the association.

Although the newly appointed VC of the Tribhuvan University (TU) invited the agitating professors for dialogue, the meeting could not reach a conclusion on Thursday.

Lamichhane said that the dialogue ended without any breakthrough as the TU VC was noncommittal on their demand of appointing UML affiliated professors to important posts, including dean.

"We will call off the protest if the VCs assure us the division of other important posts in their respective varsities," said Lamichhane.

Although the decision of Chitra Lekha Yadav-led VC-recommendation committee to forward the name of plagiarism-accused Prof Tirtha Khaniya as TU VC drew severe criticisms, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala appointed to the post on Monday.
