Private sector seeks economic commitments from NC

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The private sector has urged Nepali Congress (NC) to give high priority to policies that create business friendly environment in the country.



Speaking at an interaction with senior NC leaders on Tuesday, Suraj Vaidya, president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) sought strong commitment of the party on liberal economic policy and asked it to create investment friendly environment in the country.[break]



FNCCI had held first round of interaction on the issue with NC in the last week of July. It has been meeting senior leaders of political parties and requesting them to include programs for economic development in their election manifestos.



"We want the party to address problems facing the business sector," said Vaidya. He also demanded that the party prioritize development of highly potential sectors such as energy, tourism and agriculture to accelerate economic growth.



Responding to the business leaders, senior NC leader Dr Ram Sharan Mahat reiterated the party´s commitment to liberal economic policy that recognizes the private sector as the major player in the economy. “We are always in favor of the development of private sector in line with our ideology," Mahat said, adding, "We will do our best to reform existing legal provisions that have been creating hurdles for the private sector."
