KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Price of major construction materials has seen massive fluctuation in the market over the last three months. While the prices of cement and steel have come down, brick and aggregates have become dearer. The price of sand, however, has remained unchanged.[break]

Bricks - one of the major construction materials - have become dearer over the period. The price of best quality ´A´ grade brick manufactured by Chhama Ganesh Itta Bhatta Udyog has increased by Rs 1,500 to Rs 10,000 per 1,000 units. The price of grade ´B´ bricks manufactured by the same company has increased by Rs 1,000 to Rs 8,500 per 1,000 units.

The price of cheaper quality ´A´ grade brick has also increased by Rs 2,500 to Rs 9,500 per 1,000 units. Similarly, the price of cheaper quality ´B´ grade bricks has increased from Rs 6,500 to Rs 8,100 per 1,000 units.

The price of ´A´ grade brick manufactured by ST Maitri Hanuman Bricks, however, has increased by Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,500 per 1,000 units.

“Bricks have become expensive because monsoon affected our production, thereby creating shortage in the market,” said Roshan Dhital, owner of RD Nirman Samagri Suppliers - the supplier of construction materials.

The price of cement, however, has come down over the period. The price of Jagadamba cement, which was selling for Rs 590 per sack (50 kg) three months ago, has come down to Rs 555. Similarly, the price of Maruti cement has also decreased by Rs 15 to Rs 615 per sack. Brij, Udayapur and Hetauda brands of cements are selling for Rs 580, Rs 725 and Rs 700 per sack respectively, Rs 30 per sack lower than the prices recorded three months ago.

Steel - another important construction material - is also selling cheaper. Steel is currently selling in the range of Rs 60 to 72 per kg (inclusive of VAT) depending on quality. “There is the difference of only a rupee or two in the prices of different steel brands like Panchakanya, Himal and Saakha, among others,” Dhital added.

The price of aggregates, however, has increased by Rs 3 to Rs 55 per cubic feet. The price of sand has remained unchanged at Rs 4,000 per 100 cubic feet.
