The meeting of NEPA held on Saturday took the decision.
Similarly, a crate of eggs (30 pieces) will cost Rs 240 from Monday onwards. Earlier, a crate of eggs would cost as much as Rs 320."The new price will be applicable throughout the country. It is mandatory for all retailers and wholesalers," Shiva Ram KC, president of NEPA, said, adding, "Traders, who need to use aircraft to ferry eggs, however, can charge a big higher."
Officials of NEPA said they have already written to all wholesalers and depot to reduce price of eggs. "We will take action against traders if they are found overcharging consumers," said KC.
He also said most of the traders have already reduced egg price. "But there was no uniformity in prices. Our decision will bring uniformity in prices," added KC.
NEPA officials said the association took the decision to slash price as production of eggs has increased significantly this year. "Compared to past year, egg production has increased by around 20 percent," KC said, adding that reduction in price would provide some relief to earthquake victims across the country.
According to data, there are more than 1,000 egg farms across the country. Most of them are in Chitwan. Around 9,000 cartons of eggs are produced in the country every day. Each carton contains 120 pieces of eggs.
"Chitwan is the major producer of eggs in the country. Egg production in the district meets more than 70 percent of demand in the country," according to KC.
Meanwhile, Nepal Chicken Sellers Association (NCSA) has increased price of chicken by Rs 30 per kg. The decision means chicken will cost Rs 240 per kg from Monday.
NCSA officials said low production forced them to raise price.
"Domestic production was already low this year," Jung Bahadur BC, president of NCSA, told Republica. "The recent earthquake has damaged many poultry farms across the country resulting to drop in production."
