Prez stresses on need to tap water resources

KATHMANDU, May 23: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Sunday inaugurated the centenary celebration of Pharping Power House, which will be observed throughout this year.



On the occasion, foundation stone for the construction of a live museum at Pharping Power House was also laid. The museum is being built with 50 percent contribution from the government and Nepal Electricity Authority respectively.



The government has already sanctioned an initial amount of Rs 10 million for the museum. The project will be coordinated by a 43-member Pharping Power House Centennial National Coordination Committee headed by the Energy Minister.



Speaking on the occasion, the President said that all people of Madhes and Hills should unite and stand for strengthening democracy, lasting peace and prosperity. He urged all to follow a path of "consensus" and "collaboration" through mutual understanding.



"The development process of the country is lagging behind due to political instability," he said.



Stressing the need to develop country´s abundant water resources, Yadav said, “Sustainable development campaign should not be delayed further. It´s high time for conservation of forest resources in Chure and Tarai areas. The export of sand and pebbles should be halted immediately.”



The President also observed the electricity production procedures in the power house.



Also speaking on the occasion, Energy Minister Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said a 20-year strategy has been formulated to produce 25,000 MW of electricity in the country. He informed that investors from home and abroad are being encouraged to invest in hydropower projects.



Chairman of National Coordination Committee of Pharping Power House Centenary Celebrations, Rajendra Kumar KC, said Pharping locals have a vision to develop the power plant as a tourist destination and an energy study research center at Pharping.



The 500 MW Pharping Power House which sprawls in an area of 325 ropanis was constructed on Jestha 9, 1968 BS.
