KATHMANDU, March 31: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Saturday pressed top leaders from the three major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML -- and the United Madhes Democratic Front (UDMF) to work proactively toward creating environment for polls and persuading the agitating political groups to participate in the election process.

The president´s press advisor Rajendra Dahal said Yadav drew their attention saying the major parties need to play a special role in creating environment for polls. [break]“The president laid emphasis on ensuring participation of all the political parties in the coming election,” Dahal told Republica. According to him, the head of state suggested to the leaders to play a role supportive to the election government.

The president also urged the leaders not to limit themselves to their party activities and shoulder a broader national responsibility.

In response, leaders briefed Yadav about the latest initiatives and decisions taken by the parties in the recent days.

“We informed the president about yesterday´s [Friday] decision taken by a meeting of high-level political committee to hold dialogues with dissident political parties and other groups for their participation in the election,” CPN-UML Vice-chairman Bamdev Gautam told media persons while emerging from the president´s office.

They also told the president that the overall political situation was positive for holding election as also the government on Friday formed a team headed by minister for home and foreign affairs Madhav Ghimire to hold talks with dissident parties.

Meanwhile, Khil Raj Regmi, the head of election government, held a discussion with the three-member government´s talks team on holding dialogues with dissident political groups and other stakeholders at his official residence at Baluwatar on Saturday evening.

“The discussions between the chairman of the government and the talks team were mainly about broader principles and positions of the government and focused on making the proposed talks result-oriented,” Regmi´s personal media coordinator Rajendra Pandey told Republica.

A cabinet meeting on Friday entrusted the Ghimire-led talks team with persuading the agitating political parties, civil society and other dissident groups to join the election process. Minister for Health and Local Development Bidyadhar Mallik and Minister for Information and Communications Madhav Paudel are other members of the team.

Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist, Upendra Yadav´s Madhesi People´s Rights Forum and Ashok Rai´s Federal Socialist Party, among other various groups, have protested the formation of the election government and the decision to hold election in June.

Cadres of the CPN-Maoist have been looting laptops, cameras and other equipment being used by election officials deployed in various districts to disrupt the ongoing voter registration process.
