KATHMANDU, Nov 1: Balkrishna Basnet, Chairman of the Press Council Nepal, stated that the spread of false and one-sided information constitutes an attack on journalism. He emphasized that the Council is actively working to prevent misconduct masquerading as journalism.
While extending congratulations to an online news platform that began providing news in various mother tongues on Friday, Chairman Basnet suggested that future journalism should embrace technology and foster creativity.
"In today’s digital world, journalism can thrive only when it is technology-friendly. This needs a distinct approach to news presentation," he said. "Factually baseless, one-sided, and sensationalist reporting has undermined journalism. To counter this, we need credible and creative journalism. The future direction of journalism must prioritize this."

Over the past three months, the Press Council Nepal has launched a special campaign to promote creative and solution-oriented journalism across all newsrooms.
The Press Council has been closely monitoring various platforms including YouTube to address the misuse of media and the publication of baseless, obscene, and one-sided content.
To manage YouTube effectively, the Press Council has established specific guidelines and is regulating its content accordingly. The Council took action against 43 YouTube channels last month.
This initiative led by Chairman Basnet, who is also an experienced lawyer, marks the first of its kind in South Asia.
