President's Running Shield kicks off

KATHMANDU, June 5: Ashish Chaudhary of Central Region and Saraswati Chaudhary of Mid-western Region secured golds in boys´ and girls´ 100m sprint respectively as the Inter-regional President´s Running Shield kicked off in the capital on Wednesday. Ashis clocked 10.1 seconds while Saraswati clocked 13.5 seconds.



In the event held at the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu, Anita Thapa of Central Region secured first position in girls´ 400m race clocking 1 minute 6.6 seconds. In the 1,500 m race, Sangita Khadka claimed gold for Central Region with a timing of 4 minutes 23.3 seconds.

Kumar Gurung of Western Region secured first position in boys´ triple jump. He jumped 12.71 m. Archana Yadav of Eastern Region came first in the girls´ event with a jump of 9.60 m.[break]



Naresh Chaudhary of Far-western Region leaped 1.74 m to take gold in boys´ high jump. Similarly, Tulasa Khatri of Mid-western Region leaped 1.30 m for gold in the women´s section.



National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama, Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Hari Prasad Nepal, among others, distributed prizes to the winners.



Volleyball

Central Region and Western Region advanced into the semifinals of boys´ volleyball as winners of their respective groups during the Running Shield on Wednesday. In a match played at the covered hall of National Sports Council, Central Region defeated Eastern Region 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 to top Group A. Eastern Region entered the last four as the group runner-up.



In Group B, Western Region defeated Mid-western Region 25-9, 25-21, 25-14 and eased past Far-western Region 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 to finish on top of the group.



Similarly, Western Region and Central Region reached the semifinals in the girls´ section as well. Western Region defeated Eastern Region 25-11, 25-4, 25-12 and then beat Far-western Region 25-14, 25-10, 25-6 to enter the last four as the winner of Group B.

Central Region defeated Mid-western Region 25-11, 25-10, 25-13 to top Group A. Mid-western Region also made it to the semifinals as the group runner-up.



A total of 27 golds are up for grabs in the event that features competitions in athletics and volleyball.

The top three teams will bag Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Players who set new national records at the school level will be awarded Rs 5,000 each. Earlier, Minister for Home and Foreign Affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire inaugurated the event amidst a function.
