LUMBINI, Jan 5: President Ram Chandra Paudel is arriving in Butwal city this afternoon to witness the handover of the historic Jitgadhi Killa (Fort) to the Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City. President Paudel is also scheduled to inaugurate the Muktinathdham building.

It is said that Chief of Army Staff Prabhuram Sharma would hand over the Jitgadhi Killa to Mayor of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City Khelraj Pandey in the presence of President Paudel.

Mayor Pandey said that all preparations for the program are over.

After the handover, the Jitgadhi Killa would come under the scope of Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City. The Nepal Army carried out the reconstruction of the Jitgadhi Killa located near the Tinau river at Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City-1.

Mayor Pandey shared that Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City would advance the tourism promotional activities in a planned fashion in the historic Jitgadhi Killa. "We will protect the fort and will develop it as a tourist destination and a site for the study of Nepal-British war," Mayor Pandey added.

The Nepali forces had beaten Britain's East India Company's army in the Jitgadhi Killa under the command of Colonel Ujir Singh. Singh was the military commander at the Palpa-Butwal axis during the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-1816 and had led his force to victory.

The Fort, which acquired the name Jeetgadhi after the Nepali troops triumphing against the British in 1816 AD, is located at the western bank of the Tinau River in Butwal.
