KATHMANDU, Sept 27:  The government has scrapped the ordinance it introduced earlier to make it easier to split political party.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari scrapped the ordinance introduced to bring some amendments in the Political Party Act 2073 BS at the recommendation of the government on Monday.

Sher Bahadur Deuba-led cabinet had earlier recommended President Bhandari to issue ordinance to bring amendment in the Political Parties Act  2073. The amended provision paved the way for a leader of any political party to split the party if s/he is able to garner support of either 20 percent central working commttee members or the parliamentary committee members.

Former CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and Chairman of Janata Samajbadi Party Mahantha Thakur were able to form new political parties as per the amended provisions. Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist) and the Thakur-led Loktantrik Samajbadi Party are already formed as per the ordinance.
