Poll date won't be changed:Koirala

KATHMANDU, Aug 9: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has said there won´t be any deferral of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election scheduled for November 19.



Talking to media persons upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport after his six-day official visit to India on Friday afternoon, Koirala said,” Election is inevitable. Election date won´t be changed,” he said. Media persons had asked Koirala if NC would stand ready to defer the election as demanded by the agitating 33-party alliance led by CPN-Maoist. [break]



At a meeting with the leaders of NC and CPN-UML, senior CPN-Maoist leaders, including Chairman Mohan Baidya, had indicated that they would participate in the poll if the election was deferred for May-April next year.



While terming his “goodwill” visit to the southern neighbor highly successful, Koirala said all Indian leaders expressed concern over the upcoming CA polls in Nepal. “I have assured Indian leaders that the elections would be held on the scheduled date,” he said.



According to Koirala, the Indian side has expressed readiness to extend all kinds of logistic support to Nepal for the November polls. He said India wants to see peace, stability, democracy and development in Nepal.



Koirala also held meetings with chief ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in India. He said he raised the issues of curbing cross-border crimes and working toward resolving the flood and inundation caused in Nepal due to dam constructed on the Indian side.



He also said that his visit had proved a milestone in further strengthening party-to-party relations and fostering mutual brotherhood. Koirala, who left for India visit on Sunday, was accompanied by the party´s general secretaries Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula and his personal aide Laxman Dhakal.



During his stay in India, Koirala had held meetings with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi, Minister for External Affairs Salman Khurshid, main opposition party leader Raj Naath Singh and other senior Indian political leaders.



Poudel to visit India for treatment



NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel is flying to New Delhi on Sunday for treatment, according to a press statement issued by NC on Friday.



Poudel, who underwent surgery for piles at TU Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj recently, is suffering from other health ailments too. He will undergo prostrate surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, according to his personal aide Chiranjivi Adhikari.
