KATHMANDU, April 10: Deepak Manangey, who was arrested on Tuesday on a charge of banking fraud, tried to free himself from the legal hook by providing a cheque of Rs 2.5 million to the complainant on Wednesday.

But his attempt failed after police officials demanded that he provide the amount in cash in the presence of police officials.[break]

According to DSP Ramesh Kumar Basnet of Metropolitan Police Range Office, the accused had provided a cheque but we were not convinced with the deal between the accused and complainant.

“As he was arrested after the cheque given by him to the complainant had bounced, we were obviously skeptical this time. So we didn´t release him today,” he said. We will release him only after he provides the amount in cash to the complainant, the police said.

Manangey, who is considered one of the notorious gangsters in Nepal, was arrested by a joint team of Metropolitan Police Range Office (MPRO) and Metropolitan Police Sector Sorhakhutte from Thamel after Raj Nath Upadhyaya of Gorkha filed a complaint against Manangey over a bounced cheque.

It is believed that Manangey operates his unlawful activities from Thamel. He has been in the police watch list after an investigation by Criminal Investigation Bureau found that he had accumulated properties worth more than Rs 10 million through unfair means.

With the arrest of Manangey, the number of notorious gangsters at Hanumandhoka has reached three, a police at the MPRO said. According to the police official, Sanjeev Lama aka Syal is in police custody on the charge of extortion and vandalism, whereas Biswokranti Singh was arrested for forgery in land and property dealings.

Pressure has been mounting on the police from different quarters to release Syal from custody, who was arrested from Durbarmarg last Saturday. The police said that many hooligans have been arrested in recent weeks following increasing complaints about unlawful activities like hooliganism, extortion etc.
