Last Monday, non-Dalit locals had thrashed and smeared black soot on the faces of Maya Sarki and Manoj Bishwakarma, both from the Dalit community, accusing them of trying to defame Jeevan Bhetwal, a local, by accusing him of making a rape attempt on 30-year-old Maya Sunday evening.[break]
Deputy Inspector General of Police Bimala Thapa, who is a member of the probe team formed to investigate the incident, said the unfortunate incident took place due to insensitivity of the police.
“The police ailed to find the guilty who attempted to rape her,” DIG Thapa said. “The incident would not have occurred had the police found the guilty,” she said.
DIG Upendra Kant Aryal of the eastern regional police office said that the details of the incident would be made public only after the probe team submits its report.
Maya had not been able to identify the assaulter at night and had lodged a police complaint against Bhetwal. Later she had apologized with Bhetwal after learning that he was not the man who attempted to rape her.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi visited Belbari on Friday to take stock of the incident. Nidhi demanded stringent action against the guilty.
