Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupal Kumar Bhandari said they demolished the illegal huts as per the decision taken by an all-party mechanism. [break]
The squatters had chanted slogans against police. But, police, undeterred by sloganeering, bulldozed the huts.
Local Maoist cadres Roshan Bhujel, Narayan Khadka, Tilak Gurung an Siltu Minya had charged the squatters anything from Rs 10,00 to 15,000 to let them encroach on the public land. Locals from Dharan, Itahari, Hansposa and Prakashpur had illicitly erected their huts along a one kilometer stretch by the road.
Meanwhile, the Sunsari chapter of the UCPN (Maoists) has claimed that the encroachers are not Maoist cadres. “They have already been expelled from the party,” Maoist Sunsari district coordinator Bikranta Yadav said.
Yadav also welcomed the police´s move.
