KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The police on Thursday cracked down on the delivery service businesses, stating that door-to-door services could spread coronavirus.

With the cases of coronavirus infection surging across the nation and inside Kathmandu, the district administration offices (DAOs) of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur imposed the second round of lockdown which was extended by a week on Wednesday. However, delivery services that have been contributing to the smooth availability of daily essentials, among others, were allowed to carry out their business even during this prohibition.

As per Sunita Nhemaphuki, chief executive officer of Nepal Agri Nepal, a delivery service business of local organic foods, the police arrested a number of delivery staffers and co-founder of Kathmandu Organics from various locations. The police arrested the employees of a number of delivery service companies from Tinkune, Durbarmarg, Maligaun, New Road, Pulchok and Maharajgunj.

According to Nhemaphuki, the DAOs have been claiming that there is no stringent rule for the grocery suppliers, but the police arrested the people, citing ‘orders from higher level.’

Rohit Tiwari, chief executive officer of Global Food Mario, a startup company,  tweeted that most of their delivery bikes and vans were stopped by the traffic police. “The sudden stop has actually made it difficult for customers expecting delivery of vegetables, bakery, daily essentials along with food,” Tiwari writes.
