KATHMANDU, Aug 13: The police have arrested more than 45 construction entrepreneurs, including Roshan Dahal, the general secretary of the Federation of Contractors' Associations of Nepal (FCAN).

The construction entrepreneurs, who have been agitating with various demands including non-payment of wages on time and extending the payment deadline, reached the office of the Department of Irrigation in Lalitpur today during office hours. Ravi Singh, the president of the FCAN, said that the police arrested them and subsequently opened the lock after they had succeeded in padlocking the Department.

"We locked the office, putting forth a nine-point demand. Police opened the lock using force and arrested more than 45 entrepreneurs including our general secretary," said Singh.

On Sunday, more than 45 construction entrepreneurs were arrested by the police and kept in the district police office, Lalitpur.

Earlier, this morning, they also padlocked the office of the Director General of the Department of Roads. FCAN has started the third phase of protest against the non-payment of wages and non-extension of projects. They have claimed that a large sum of money has not been paid by the government to them. The delay has caused numerous challenges and setbacks within the construction industry.

FCAN has been demanding extension of contract periods and price adjustments in line with the prevailing inflation rate. The construction entrepreneurs’ body has also asked the government to ensure fair compensation for their work in the changing economic conditions.
