KATHMANDU, June 24: The tourism sector in Pokhara is experiencing a sense of renewed optimism as it gradually recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a temporary slump due to the suspension of international programs, the tourism business in Pokhara has started regaining momentum. Tourism entrepreneurs are optimistic about its potential for further growth, particularly if regular flights can be established from the Pokhara Regional International Airport (PRIA). However, they express concerns over the government's lack of interest in promoting the sector in the post-pandemic era.

Entrepreneurs emphasize that promoting tourism is vital to strengthening the country's economic situation. Pom Narayan Shrestha, Chairman of the Pokhara Tourism Council, expressed delight at the resurgence of tourism after the pandemic. He highlighted the positive impact of Indian and Chinese tourists visiting Pokhara during the Dragon Boat Festival and International Yoga Day, and sees these events as opportunities to attract other international tourists. Shrestha believes that regular operations at PRIA would significantly contribute to the flourishing tourism business in Pokhara.

Likewise, Laxman Subedi, President of the Hotel Association of Nepal Pokhara, expressed hope as the increasing number of tourists uplifts the spirit of tourism entrepreneurs. He emphasized that a rise in tourism would lead to job creation and establish Pokhara as a training ground for individuals seeking opportunities abroad. Subedi noted the need for skilled manpower in Pokhara following the pandemic and stressed those regular operations at PRIA would ensure a steady influx of tourists.

Uday Subedi, President of the Village Tourism Promotion Forum in Gandaki Province, voiced concerns about the transient nature of international programs and their limited impact on tourist numbers. While acknowledging a gradual increase in tourist arrivals after the pandemic, Subedi believes that the inflow of foreign tourists in Pokhara remains relatively low.

He urges the government to prioritize tourism promotion, which would boost business morale and attract more tourists. Furthermore, he suggests that Nepal Airlines Corporation should operate international flights regularly from PRIA to facilitate the growth of the tourism sector.
