CHITWAN, March 6: A person, who was convicted of killing a one-horned rhino in Chitwan National Park (CNP) three years ago, has finally been arrested.

Issuing a statement earlier, CNP informed that Gopi Chaudhary, 40, of Padampur VDC -6 in Chitwan was arrested on February 27. He was nabbed by a joint team of CNP and the police. [break]

In April 2006, a case was registered against Gopi after Rajendra Chaudhary and Hathana Chaudary had recorded their statements against him at CNP. But he has been absconding since.

Chief Conservation Officer at CNP Fadhindra Raj Kharel informed that even though he was yet to get arrested, CNP had found him guilty and slapped on him a jail term of 15 years along with a fine of Rs 100,000 on August 30, 2010.

The National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act of the country has entrusted the chief conservation officer of CNP with overseeing cases on wild animals poaching.

As per the act, if someone is convicted, he or she can be fined up to Rs 100,000 or face 5-15 years in jail or both.
