PM urges locals to help settle squatters at Sundarighat

KATHMANDU, July 16: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has urged the locals of Lalitpur to help settle the squatters at Sundarighat.



Talking to representatives of the local struggle committee at the Prime Minister´s official residence in Baluwatar on Monday, the Prime Minister said that the squatters are being rehabilitated at Sundarighat for a temporary period and urged the locals not to flare up the issue and obstruct the government´s move to settle the landless.[break]



Leader of CPN-UML, Raghuji Pant, who was present at the meeting said that the Prime Minister urged the locals to resolve the issue instead of flaring it up.



The struggle committee comprising locals, including leaders of CPN-Maoist and CPN-UML has stood against the government´s plan to rehabilitate the squatters at Sundarighat.



Meanwhile, Chairman of All Nepal Squatters´ Association Dipak Rai said that some political parties were engaged in election-centered politics by protesting against the squatters´ resettlement.



Similarly, squatters have expressed their reluctance to shift to Sundarighat citing insecurity. They have said that leaders of some political parties and locals were issuing threats against them.
