KATHMANDU, Oct 18: Amid huge fresh milk deficit in the market, two lawmakers have urged Prime Minister Dr Babu Ram Bhattrai to arrange imports of improved breed of cows and buffaloes from India during his visit to the southern neighbor. Dr Bhattarai is leaving for New Delhi on Thursday.

Issuing a joint press statement on Tuesday, lawmakers Gagan Thapa and Rabindra Adhikari said the government as a short term measure must import at least 10,000 improved breed of cows and buffaloes to address fresh milk deficit.

Daily demand for fresh milk in the capital hovers around 400,000 liters. Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) and private diaries have managed to supply just around 300,000 liters. DDC - the state-owned dairy producer - has been importing 50,000 liters of fresh milk a day from Bihar, India to deal with the milk deficit.

Though farmers produce around 500,000 liters of milk every day, only around 12 percent of the total production comes to the market due to lack of market infrastructure.

According to dairy producers, daily demand for fresh milk across the country hovers around 800,000 liters.
