Nepal met the ambassadors from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Friday, lobbying for support to Nepal´s candidacy for UNGA presidency. Nepal has filed the name of Kul Chandra Gautam, former deputy executive director of UNICEF and Assistant Under Secretary General of the UN, for UNGA presidency. [break]
According to the prime minister´s press advisor Bishnu Rijal, the prime minister is also scheduled to meet Asian ambassadors based in Kathmandu on Monday to formally request for their support to Gautam, who is the prime minister´s special advisor on peace and international affairs.
UNGA presidency rotates among five geographic groups -- African, Asian, Eastern European, Latin American and Carribean and Western European and other states. The post is regarded the most prestigious in the UN.
Nepal and Qatar have filed nominations for presidency as it is the turn of Asia to head the UNGA from September 2011-2012 September. Nepal had decided to present its candidature for presidency of the UNGA in 2000. Qatar announced its candidacy two years later. This is the first time Nepal has filed its candidacy for the post.
