KATHMANDU, Aug 18: A meeting between Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Speaker Devraj Ghimire took place today in their bid to resume the obstructed parliament.

During the meeting held at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Baluwatar, PM Dahal said he would take initiatives to allow parliament to do its business smoothly.

“I will play a role in resuming parliament. You should also do your bit. We must reach a consensus soon. I will take more initiatives with the leader of the main opposition party,” mentioned PM Dahal.

The main opposition CPN-UML has been obstructing parliament since July 26 demanding the formation of a high level committee to investigate the recent gold scam.

Similarly, Speaker Ghimire drew the attention of the Prime Minister to immediately take initiatives to resume parliament, saying the obstruction in parliament is not a good thing.

“Lawmakers have asked for time to speak. They are saying that they have not been able to put their view on issues like natural disasters. There is a situation where parliament cannot proceed without a political consensus. General people are taking the parliament obstruction negatively. At least, the ruling and opposition parties need to hold talks seriously in resuming parliament,” said Speaker Ghimire.

There were also complaints that the law-making process has been affected due to the inability to elect leaders of the parliamentary committees as a result of the parliament obstruction, he said.

“I have responsibly taken initiatives for a political consensus to resume parliament. But, it is not becoming fruitful,” shared the Speaker.
