Addressing the 18th anniversary of Reporters Club Nepal at a function in the capital on Wednesday, Prime Minister Oli said that NC's joining the UML-led government was the only way ahead for development in the country and the resolution of various crises across the nation. He further opined that such a move would also pave the way for the NC to rectify its previous mistake of not supporting the UML during government formation as per a past understanding between the two parties.Oli said that his government has succeeded in accomplishing the major task of restoring good relations with India and elevating Nepal-China relations to a new height.
Clarifying that his recent China visit was not intended to alienate the southern neighbor, Prime Minister Oli reiterated that Nepal wants to maintain cordial relations with both India and China. "We should seek benefit from both of our neighbors while not going against their interests," Oli urged. "Let's not engage in past differences any more."
Prime Minister Oli also said that the phase of political struggle in the country had ended with the promulgation of the new constitution. "We need to focus on development and economic prosperity from now on," he said. Indicating dissatisfaction among the Madhes-based parties over the new constitution, Oli explained that this new statute has provided equality to all citizens.
Speaker Onsari Gharti, also addressing the function, said the constitution has ensured all the basic rights for all citizens. "If there is anything deficient in the constitution it can be rectified through amendment backed by the consensus of the political parties through talks and negotiations," she said.
Main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba underlined the need of addressing demands from across the country concerning the new constitution through dialogue. "We are ready to solved the demarcation dispute and other issues through dialogue. I urge all agitating forces to come forward for talks," he said.
Agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) leader Upendra Yadav said, "Madhesi people will not accept the new constitution unless and until it ensures equal rights for them and ends discriminations." This constitution has backtracked from the interim constitution and they would not accept it in its present form, said Yadav.
