Swimming diva Shreya Dhital is expecting support from swimming enthusiasts while her posters appealing for votes can be found throughout downtown Kathmandu. Sixteen-year-old Dhital broke two national records recently, one of them during the Swimming World Championships in Shanghai, China in July.
Other three nominees -- Sipora Gurung, Sagar Thapa and Deepak Maharjan -- have got the backing of their community as well as their respective sports associations throughout the country.
National volleyball player Sipora Gurung is already a household name in her hometown Pokhara, where she is getting massive support for her campaign.
“There is hardly anyone who doesn´t know Sipora here,” says Sudarshan Ranjit, who is enthusiastically supporting the 17-year-old volleyball star in her campaign.
Gurung, who came to limelight at the age of 12 after winning bronze medal in the 10th South Asian Games in 2006, is also getting helping hands from her supporters outside the country.
Meanwhile, national football team captain Sagar Thapa is upbeat after his team raised funds for his campaign through friendly matches in Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa.
“I will never forget this moment. I had never thought I would get so much support from the Eastern Region, where I belong,” he said.
Likewise, boxing star Deepak Maharjan is enjoying the support of the people of his village Bosigaun as well as those from Lalitpur and Kirtipur. Maharjan was the only Nepali athlete to win medal in the 16th Asian Games in China last year.
Need for Speed, Satisfied
