The 9N-AFT, which had taken off from Nepalgunj and arrived at the airport at 11:51am, overshot the runway by 50 meters, according to the head of the Civil Aviation Authority, Nepalgunj, Devananda Upadhyaya. The plane´s brake system became partially ineffective and could not stop at the end of the runway possibly due to overload, the official said. The plane was carrying cargo weighing 1,085 kg. Crew members Rabindra Rokaya and foreign pilot Adrian, along with a Goma Air employee B Rokaya are all safe.
The Juphal airport is considered to be the most difficult of the airports among Karnali zone´s four airports. Juphal´s runway is just 450 meters long. Civil aviation officials claimed the airport is considerably dangerous as landing and taking off is done from a single direction from which wind (tail wind) blows.
There is a large rock near the runway which the officials have not been able to remove despite many attempts.
