As a child, Phurba's passion for football and running was evident, but he had never fathomed the idea of winning an international award. He displayed remarkable skills in football during his younger days, even earning a spot in the district team. Additionally, his talent for running was evident. However, when Phurba ventured into the tourism sector in 2012, he had no inkling of the existence of this esteemed award, nor did he anticipate establishing himself within the tourism industry.
Initially starting his journey as a porter from the Khumbu region, Phurba relocated to Kathmandu in 2018 to pursue his career. For several years, he tirelessly served as a porter, assisting and accompanying tourists. Gradually, he progressed to the role of an assistant guide, a position he held until 2018. It was on October 5, 2018, that he assumed the mantle of a trekking guide, a turning point in his career. From that moment onward, he made Kathmandu his base and dedicated himself to his newfound responsibilities.
After dedicating eight years of relentless service, Phurba Sherpa achieved a remarkable milestone by securing his first-ever international award. Overwhelmed with pride, he expressed, "This award stands as the most significant and awe-inspiring achievement of my career. Grateful for the recognition.”

Emphasizing the significance of patience, dedication, and hard work, he remarked, "Success cannot be achieved overnight; it demands persistence and unwavering effort. I have always maintained a humble approach towards my accomplishments."
As a Sherpa, Phurba primarily guides tourists in the Everest and Annapurna regions. With his extensive experience, he has successfully guided visitors through various locations and high-altitude destinations including Everest Base Camp, Gokyo, Khongma La, Cho La, Renzo La Pass, Namche, Annapurna Circuit, and the Annapurna Base Camp.
Upon discovering information about the award through social media, Phurba Sherpa promptly filled out the application form. He diligently kept himself updated and had a partial awareness of the award due to the participation of his colleagues from the company he was associated with. Eventually, he entered the competition in the final months of the previous year and emerged victorious. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed, "Last Thursday, around 11:30 pm, I was declared the winner. The excitement of the moment kept me wide awake throughout the night, unable to contain my happiness."
Nepal, renowned for its majestic mountains, particularly attracts international tourists for its exceptional high-altitude treks. However, Phurba emphasized that it is not solely the abundance of such routes that make Nepal an enticing destination. He emphasized the importance of development, security, and the sensitivity associated with high-altitude trekking, stating, "These aspects set Nepal apart from other countries when it comes to high-altitude treks."
Winning this esteemed award has sent a resounding message worldwide that Nepal is a secure and ideal destination for high-altitude trekking. Overjoyed by this recognition, Phurba exclaimed, "It has unequivocally proven that Nepali guides are the best, and I have never experienced such immense happiness and excitement before."
Phurba's dedication extended beyond guiding tourists as he also prioritized imparting knowledge about the community, culture, social values, lifestyle, and language of the places visited by the tourists. He says he was always sensitive and respectful as he was fully aware that the impression conveyed to tourists plays a vital role in shaping the country's tourism industry. Furthermore, he actively addressed environmental aspects and climate change during his guidance. It is the combination of these unique and impactful qualities that set him apart and led to his well-deserved victory in the award.
The selection process for the Wanderlust World Guide Award involves tourists who have visited Nepal voting for guides from various countries participating in the competition. The journey from nominations to becoming a top finalist is determined by these votes. Following this stage, a jury member from the esteemed Wanderlust World Guide panel meticulously selects the ultimate winner. Since its establishment in 2005 in the United Kingdom, this prestigious award has played a pivotal role in shaping the tourism sector. This organization says it is dedicated to recognizing exceptional guides and tour leaders worldwide, focusing on their non-promotional contributions to the field.
