Now the consumers will need to pay Rs 82 per liter for petrol in the Valley and Rs 81 in Tarai districts. Likewise, diesel and kerosene will cost Rs 61 a liter in the Valley and Rs 59.50 in the Tarai. [break]
As in the past, consumers will have to pay 50 paisa on top of the new rates as pollution tax. The corporation board decided to hike the prices on Thursday evening and the new rates came into effect instantly.
“We raised the prices because the import prices continued to jump, inflicting as much as Rs 370 million losses a month to the corporation,” said Commerce Secretary and NOC Chairman Purushottam Ojha.
The corporation estimates the decision to bring down its losses to around Rs 270 million.
“With the new rates, our loss on diesel has dropped to Rs 3 a liter,” said Digambhar Jha, managing director of the corporation. However, on petrol and kerosene, it now earns a profit of Re 1 and Rs 7 a liter respectively.
The corporation suffer the biggest loss in LPG. However, it left LPG price unchanged for the time being.
“At the present import rates, we are incurring a loss of Rs 183 per cylinder of LPG. We cannot defer its price adjustment for long though,” said Jha. Sources said the corporation could hike the LPG price in a few days.
