Pending hearings likely to start soon
KATHMANDU, June 23:Newly elected chairman of the Parliamentary Hearings Special Committee (PHSC) Kul Bahadur Gurung said that the House panel will start the pending hearings for the appointment of chief justice, chief election commissioner, Supreme Court justices and ambassadors soon.
"The committee elected me as a chairman today (on Wednesday). The committee will solicit complaints from the public against the nominees right after the Speaker forwards the recommendations from the government, constitutional council and the judicial council," said Gurung.
"The hearings for the recommended individuals could start in two weeks time since the committee has to allocate 10 days for receiving complaints," he added.
He also informed that the taskforce formed by the committee Monday to formulate its work procedure will submit the draft within the next two days. "We will finalize the work procedure by this week," he said.
Octogenarian lawmaker Gurung from Nepali Congress was elected as chairman of the PHSC on Wednesday afternoon. At the meeting of the committee on Wednesday, Ganeshman Gurung of the CPN-UML tabled a proposal to elect Gurung as the PHSC chair while Chinkaji Shrestha of the Nepali Congress seconded it.
Speaker Onsari Gharti administered the oath of office to the newly-elected PHSC Chairman Gurung on Wednesday itself.
Lawmakers from all parties in the committee had forged a consensus to elect NC leader Gurung unanimously as the chairman of the committee.
