BHAKTAPUR, Oct 27: President of the Nepali Congress (NC) Shushil Koirala said the Unified CPN (Maoist) seems to be serious for the peace process of late.

Speaking at a programme organised by NC, Bhaktapur District Committee to exchange greetings to mark the Tihar festival, he said the Maoist leadership has understood that it is not possible to conclude the peace process and write democratic constitution undermining the existence of NC and that the Maoist leaders have been flexible.[break]

The UCPN-Maoist should forge an environment of confidence among the parties by handing over the arms to the government, returning the captured property, reinstating the displaced people, and dismantling the paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League (YCL) including others, said Koirala.

In a different note, Koirala said he will not let split of NC as a party President.

"I have started conversation with the former Prime Minister and senior leader of NC, Sher Bahadur Deuba, to settle internal disputes in the party," he said. "I´ll lead the party keeping intact party unity as NC has not forgotten the division of the party in the past", he added.

NC General Secretary Prakashman Singh, Gopalman Shrestha and others blamed the UCPN-Maoist for not being serious on peace and constitution writing processes.
