DHANGADHI, Aug 28: A patient lost his life after his kidney was removed during a kidney stone operation at Swastik Cardio and Multispecialty Hospital in Dhangadhi.

Angel Lal Chaudhary, 56, a resident of Shivanagar, Ward No-10, Kanchanpur, Belauri Municipality, was admitted to Swastik Hospital on Saturday morning for surgery to remove a kidney stone.

He was taken to the operating theatre at 1:30 PM on Saturday. Doctor Johnesh Tiwari operated on him.

Chaudhary underwent surgery performed by Doctor Johnesh Tiwari at 1:30 PM on Saturday. However, an hour post-surgery, he began experiencing intense abdominal pain and swelling. Relatives informed the nursing staff of these distressing symptoms, and a nurse administered an injection to reduce the pain. Unfortunately, Chaudhary's condition deteriorated, and he lost consciousness by 7 PM. Relatives say that even though the patient's condition worsened, the doctor did not come on time.

It wasn't until 8 PM that a doctor arrived, attempting to drain abdominal blood with a syringe. Subsequently, at around 12 AM, the decision was made to remove Chaudhary's kidney due to uncontrolled bleeding stemming from negligence during the kidney stone surgery.

"The doctor came at 12 o'clock in the night and said that the kidney should be removed to save the patient's life," Buddhiram Chaudhary, the son of the deceased, said, "We said that it is okay even if the kidney is removed to save my father's life."

At 2 AM on Sunday, the doctor came again and said that the operation was successful, but the family was not allowed to see Chaudhary after the procedure.

"Even though my father passed away at 2 o'clock on Sunday, we were informed of his death only on Monday," he said, "The doctor killed my father through negligence." Relatives demand that doctor Tiwari, who killed his father by negligence, should be punished.

Swastik Hospital said that Chaudhary died at 9:30 AM on Monday.

Mahesh Joshi, president of Swastik Hospital, dismissed the allegations and said that the doctor was not negligent in the surgery. Chaudhary's kidney had to be removed due to uncontrolled bleeding post-surgery. He said that the patient died due to unfortunate fate. His relatives are saying that the patient died due to the doctor's negligence without understanding the technical aspects. "When the bleeding did not stop, kidney removal was the last option," Joshi said.

On the other hand, the deceased's son went to the District Police Office, Kailali, to file a complaint against Dr Tiwari claiming that his father died due to the doctor's negligence.

The police did not register a complaint against the doctor. Chief District Officer of Kailali, Yuvraj Kattel, said that the police office and the district administration office did not register the complaint as such issues are overseen by the medical council.

Kattel said that if an error is found after investigating the incident, the information will be forwarded to the Nepal Medical Council for further action.
