BANEPA, Oct 16: The local administration has banned passenger buses in Nepalthok-Khurkot section of Banepa-Sindhuli-Bardibas Highway that has witnessed an increase in road accidents in the recent days. An all-party meeting in the district took the decision to ban buses until the road is upgraded and widened.

The decision comes hot on the heels of a bus accident in Gairipuchar cliff of Jhanga-Jholi-6 on Thursday that left 41 persons dead and 15 injured. [break]

Hazama-Ando Construction has been constructing the third section of the highway and District Development Committee had opened a track for the locals to travel to the district headquarters.

“We have decided to start upgrading the Nepalthok-Khurkot track from Sunday. We have requested for government help on the matter,” Chief District Officer (CDO) of Sindhuli Beni Madhav Gyawali said.

The meeting has also decided to identify accident-prone spots in the district and bar buses from carrying passengers on the roof.

There have been three big accidents along the Nepalthok-Khurkot section in the past two years.

On May 3 this year, 12 persons were killed and as many injured in a passenger bus accident at Ritthebhir.

The Thursday´s accident was third in three consecutive days at the same spot. A jeep accident at the spot two days ago had left seven people injured while there was another jeep accident on Wednesday.
