Parties call Chitwan banda over abducted doctor

CHITWAN, May 30: Political parties here have called for a Chitwan banda on Sunday.



The banda or general strike has been called jointly by the parties and the Save Bhaktaman Campaign in order to exert pressure on the authorities concerned to find Executive Director of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Dr Bhakta Man Shrestha. [break]



Dr Shrestha has been missing since the past 13 days.



As a result, vehicles have remained off the road in Chitwan on Sunday since early morning. All educational institutions and factories also remain closed.



However, the Grade 11 examinations that begins today will continue, Anil Sharma of UCPN (Maoist), Chitwan said.



Meanwhile, the parties have also called for formation of a high-level investigation commission in order to probe the incident of the disappearance of Dr Shrestha.



"If the condition of Dr Shrestha is not known until today evening, we would resort to a more severe agitation", Krishna Khanal of CPN-UML, Chitwan said.



The parties calling for the bandh today include the CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, UCPN (Maoist), CPN (ML), Rastriya Janamorcha and others.



In the meantime, medical treatment in the Cancer Hospital continues to remain affected as a result of the agitating doctors.
