Parliamentary committee directs govt to submit bill on local polls

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: The development committee under the Legislature-Parliament has directed the government to immediately submit a bill required for holding local bodies’ elections.

A meeting of the development committee held on Wednesday, has directed the government to submit the bill to this effect in the Parliament, said Chairman of the committee and lawmaker Rabindra Adhikari.

Present in the Parliamentary meeting was also Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Hitraj Pandey. Chairman Adhikari said the committee has directed the government to submit the required bill in the Parliament following the meeting with Minister Pandey.

The development committee has directed the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development to prepare and submit the bill saying that the development works have been hit due to the lack of regulations on the election infrastructure development activities.

“The committee directs the Ministry for Federal Affairs and Local Development to immediately submit required bill and finalize the restructuring of the local bodies as it will pave the way for the implementation of the constitution,” the committee directed in a statement.

In the statement, the committee further says, “the committee directs the Council of Ministers and Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Law to submit the bill required for holding local bodies’ elections.”

Following the meeting, Minister Pandey said the government is serious about holding the elections of the local bodies.
