KATHMANDU, Oct 18: Parliamentarians Surya Pathak and Balkrishna Khad have written to the Federal Parliament Secretariat informing it that they are not taking the Dashain allowances this year.
In a letter on Sunday, Pathak, who represents the ruling Nepal Communist Party from Baglung-1 in the House of Representatives, asked the Federal Parliament Secretariat to withdraw Rs 64,070 which he was supposed to receive as Dashain allowances.
He also urged the Secretariat to deposit the same money to the government's account.
Pathak's announcement comes at a time when parliamentarians are facing sharp criticism on social media for receiving Dashain allowances ‘even as the country is reeling under severe crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic’.
Meanwhile, Khad, who is the chief whip of the main opposition party Nepali Congress, said that he decided to return his Dashain allowances as “the country is passing through a difficult period created by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
