KATHMANDU, Nov 11: Lawmakers have described the impeachment motion against Chief (presently suspended) of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Lokman Singh Karki as 'timely, objective and right'.

Taking part in the deliberations that recommenced today on the impeachment proposal in the House, they said, "The House is capable of passing the proposal and its endorsement is needed as well."

It is noted that a total of 157 lawmakers including Mahendra Bahadur Shahi of CPN (Maoist Center) on October 23 registered a motion of impeachment against Karki at the Parliament Secretariat. It was registered at the Parliament as per the Article 101(1) of the Nepal's Constitution and Rule 1 (138) of the Legislature-Parliament Regulations. The CIAA Chief is impeached for violating office code of conducts.

Taking part in the deliberations, Dhanraj Gurung asserted that none is above the constitution and law in democracy and there is no alternative to removing the suspended CIAA Chief off his post through impeachment. He accused Karki of making mockery of the rule of law and insulting the sovereign parliament.

Maneuvering is still on the practice to reinstate Karki to the CIAA chief post, he said, adding that the glory of the parliament will fade down if it failed to endorse the motion.

Purushottam Poudel of CPN (UML) said the Constitution has guaranteed punishment against anyone violating it and the impeachment motion brought against the CIAA Chief who made a mockery of rule of law was appropriate.

CPN (ML)'s Shibachandra Chaudhry said the passage of impeachment motion against Karki would discourage others to breach the constitution and laws.

Rastriya Janamorcha's Chitra Bahadur KC demanded action against those who recommended Karki's name for the appointment to the CIAA Chief post. Our political leaders who recommended Lokmanji for the appointment were well aware of his character and they too deserve punishment, he added.

However, Prem Bahadur Singh said though the impeachment proposal against Karki is meaningful and legal, it was not brought in a transparent way.

A total of 17 lawmakers took part in the deliberations in today's meeting. Most of them aired views in the favor of the impeachment motion. Milan Rajbanshi, Yashoda Kumari Lama, Sher Bahadur Tamang, Jagdish Narsingh KC, Rajaram Syangtan, Bharat Saud , Panchakarna Rai, Sita Giri and Surendra Chaudhary were among others giving their views on the motion.

The Legislature-Parliament shall meet again at 11:00 am on November 14 to discuss the impeachment motion. RSS
