KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Not the one to back down easily, the director of Badhshala Manoj Pandit is prepared to take up the gauntlet and has decided to approach Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to plead his case.

Ministry of Defense (MoD) had written to the Ministry of Information and Communications to stop the screening of Badhshala, a film that details torture at the hands of army personnel. Under the scenario, Pandit is certain that his film stands no chance of receiving the green light from the Film Censor Board. [break]

“Now that it´s mired in such a controversy and is facing strong objections from the defense ministry, there is no way my film will see the light of day,” he said.

Pandit expects to meet the PM personally and plead his case. If the meeting still doesn´t yield a positive result for his film, he is firm in his resolve to fight the case at the court.

Brigadier General Suresh Sharma, the Army´s spokesperson, declined to comment when asked what further actions the MoD is planning to take on the issue. However, he did confirm that the content of the film had drawn the attention of the ministry.

He said, “The film is not based on any true events and its subject is highly contentious.”

The Ministry of Information and Communications says that it would act on the matter only after the film arrives at the censor board. Sailaja Regmi, under secretary at the ministry, said, “There´s nothing we can do until the film comes to the board.”

The film was scheduled to release on March 8.
