KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Private and Boarding Schools´ Organization of Nepal (PABSON) warned the government on Tuesday that it shut down all boarding schools in the country indefinitely if the government pressurized them to pay the Education Service Tax (EST).

Addressing a press meet in the capital, PABSON executives alleged that the government was creating several difficulties for the boarding schools on one pretext or the other time and again, and EST was one of those.

The PABSON announcement comes a week after Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai warned that students from schools that fail to pay taxes would not be allowed to appear for the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination in April.

In the budget statement last year, the government had announced to levy five per cent tax on private schools, saying the EST would be spent on education of students in remote parts of the country.
